Sugary Delights Novelty Cakes
|

|
| This was my first novelty cake. I am very proud of it even though the towers are a bit wonky! |
Welcome to my web site!
My name is Trish Orton.
I am married to David and we have one son, Aaron, who lives with his partner and 3 children in North Norfolk. David
and I have lived in Potter Heigham, Norfolk, England for 22 years.
I started to make novelty cakes in March 2006 when I was asked
by a colleague at work if I could make a fairy castle cake for her daughter's 5th birthday from a picture she had taken
on her mobile phone. That was indeed a challenge, as I don't seem to be able to say "no", and as I have always enjoyed
baking, more particularly gateaux, I thought "why not?". However, it didn't take me long to become hooked on sugarcraft,
especially after I had bought my first book on the subject, Magical Cakes by Debbie Brown. I was completely taken by the sort of thing that can be achieved
with a little imagination and lots of patience and I have made quite a lot of cakes since then, some of which you can
see on these pages.
My mother is from Germany, and my german grandmother was a superb cook having learned her skills whilst in service during
the 1920s as a cook to a large English family in the Rhineland (she never learned English, though!). She taught
my mother her skills, and she in turn taught my sister and me.
David and I decided we would like to try running a pub in Norfolk
during the 1980s when we returned from a spell in Saudi Arabia. I think the fact that Saudi is a "dry" country may have
influenced us slightly! We took on a tenancy in Potter Heigham in 1987, and stayed the course for about 4
years, when we decided we had had enough of being tied down. I spent most of the 4 years in the kitchen, so
didn't really get to know many of the local people! I have made up for it now, as we liked it so much here we decided
to stay in Potter Heigham.
Please come back regularly, as I am always adding to the cakes I have made.
I hope you enjoy browsing these pages.
Trish
